Mohammad Al-Mojil Group’s (MMG) core business is construction of projects mainly in the oil & gas and petrochemical industry. But now it is equally focusing on civil projects (See Construction Civil). MMG is mainly involved in onshore and offshore construction which has five basic units including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation as well as maintenance and turnaround work units. In addition to oil & gas and Petrochemical projects, MMG has also undertaken utility projects that include desalination and power plants. The group possesses all the facilities related to construction such as machinery and equipment, steel factory, warehouse, procurement, technical services and information technology.
Civil Works unit
Before the initiation of the work on the project site, the Project Management Team (PMT) undertakes survey, inspection and establishes marking on the proposed area. The PMT will also monitor daily preparation activities and verify compliance with the clients’ specification. The scope of work involved in site preparation includes excavation work, trenching and backfilling, dewatering, clearing of drainage, setting up security fencing, demolition of buildings, structures and equipment, concrete related work and asphalting.
The PMT then undertakes construction of a building or the structure that will house the operations of the plant, workforce, and supplies. The building work involves concrete flooring, building of masonry wall, drywall construction, building of roof, building of ceiling, pre-cast building doors and windows installation and waterproofing.
Structural Works Unit
Structural work involves fabrication, installation and erection, inspection and testing, commissioning and transfer possession to the clients.
Prior to the start of any work the Quality Assurance and Control Department of the MMG will draw up a plan and schedule in consultation with the clients for periodic testing of process modules and equipment at the different stages of the fabrication. MMG has the capability to fabricate steel structures stages and platforms, as well as various types of mechanical equipment such as pressure vessels, fired heaters, heat exchangers, boilers, storage tanks, towers, drums and pressure piping.
The most crucial and sensitive part of the project is installation and erection work. Prior to installation, an erection procedure plan is submitted to the client for approval. The plan lists the sequence and schedule of the erection. Once approval is received from the client the work is completed in three stages. When the installation is ready to be handed over, then the client’s quality controller or a third party nominated by the client inspects the installed fabricated product. To ensure that the products meet the client’s specification, MMG has put in place a stringent inspection and testing plan during the various stages of the project.
Mechanical Works Unit
Mechanical work refers to piping, scaffolding, rigging works related to lifting and installation, preparation and testing of mechanical equipment. Since both the oil & gas and petrochemical plants involve complex process, it is important for the company to comply with the specification and requirements of its clients as it usually involves hazardous materials which may be combustive and toxic.
Electrical and Instrumentation Unit
After the completion of the equipment installation, the next stage would be the installation of electrical systems throughout the site or plant. It will include conduit installation, cable tray installation, cathodic protection, cabling, grounding systems, duct back installations, electric motors and generators, switchgear installation, transformer and junction box installation, motor control panels, lighting and communication systems and relays and breakers. Electric supervisor in coordination with quality control inspector and client’s representative will thoroughly check all the installations prior to handing over.
Once the electrical system is in place, the instrumentation supervisor will then oversee the installation of instruments as set out in the scope of work. All the installations will undergo a series of testing and calibration before they are installed.
Maintenance & Turnaround Unit
Plant maintenance can well be categorized into daily or turnaround plant maintenance. Under the terms of the maintenance contract, the company would perform specific maintenance works and all materials required for the maintenance work will be supplied by the plant owners. Daily plant maintenance is essential to keep plant in good operating conditions and it is undertaken without shutting down the operations of the entire plant.
Total plant and turnaround plant maintenance is usually undertaken to increase the plant’s capacity and efficiency. It involves either the replacement of old equipment on a large scale or the addition of new equipment to existing plants. In turnaround maintenance a temporary shutdown of the plant is required.
Construction Support and Facilities
To provide support to construction activity, the group has set up a Construction Support Services and Facilities Division that has two major components namely: Heavy Machinery and Equipment Services Unit and Steel Fabrication Factory Unit. The Equipment services unit manages and maintains a fleet of approximately 5,057 units of cranes, earth movers, air compressors forklifts, pumps, trailer tractors, blasting machines and other construction related equipment.
The company’s steel plant is capable of producing up to 350 tons high-quality piping in a single shift. Fabricated products are manufactured in accordance with the internationally accepted ASME standards. (For more details click on Fabrication).
The company also has various camp facilities for the employees through the Kingdom. To support the construction and project activities the group maintains several warehouses in the Kingdom to provide storage for the huge demand of supplies required for the project.
MMG has established a central procurement function unit to coordinate all procurement activity throughout the company. The unit’s role is to implement approved procurement policies and to optimize the quality and cost of all inputs.
The company owns a state-of-the art Information Technology department with proper local Area Networking. All the systems of the IT department integrate with the general ledger module. MMG also has the distinction of being the first construction company in the region to put SAP modules in all its operations, making its functioning more scientific, methodical and result oriented.
