Pursuing its diversification plan, MMG is now focusing more on the civil construction. MMG’s core business is construction of projects within the oil, gas and petrochemical industry. Five decades of technical knowledge and continuous improvement, along with strict adherence to quality control and assurance practices, has positioned MMG with a flawless record of delivering projects worth billions of dollars. With the robust growth of national economy and the clarion call of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud for the diversification of national economy from oil-based to multi facet economy, MMG prepared its own diversification strategy and decided to enter into new areas. Civil construction was the logical choice as the group possessed required infrastructure as well as expertise.

The fast growing economy of the Kingdom has led to a mammoth infrastructure construction program in the public and private sector. The Kingdom announced its plan to spent around SR500 billion in the construction of infrastructure in the next five years. Two phases of the infrastructure building program has already been completed and the third phase is in the offing. The new infrastructure program includes building 600 new factories, schools, doubling desalination capacity, increasing electrical generation and distribution and some 600,000 new houses.. Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry has estimated that the Kingdom will require at least 1 million new houses in the next five years to address population growth needs. Similarly the Saudi Ministry of Education has outlined a $4 billion plan to build another 4,000 schools.

MMG has right from its inception responded to the demands of the market so that it could participate significantly in the growth and development of the country. The new infrastructure projects has motivated MMG to accelerate its activity in the civil construction and contribute its lot in meeting the national challenge.

Under the diversification plan, MMG took up civil construction as well. Equipped with its decades old experience in construction industry and excellent professionals that constitute Saudi nationals as well as a fine mixture of European, American and Asians, the group immediately made its presence felt and signed projects contracts worth more than SR500 million that included some very prestigious projects like King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) and KAPSARC (King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center) and Saudi Aramco.

Civil Works unit
Civil construction has always been part of Construction operations at the MMG right from its inception. In all the construction of oil & gas and Petrochemical projects, the first task has always been construction of the building to house the project. Hence civil construction was essentially a know field. Now with a separate civil construction division in place the experts before the initiation of the project, the Project Management Team (PMT) undertakes survey, inspection and establishes marking on the proposed area. The PMT will monitor daily preparation activities and verify compliance with the clients’ specification. The scope of work involved in site preparation include excavation work, trenching and backfilling, dewatering, clearing of drainage, setting up security fencing, demolition of buildings, structures and equipment, concrete related work and asphalting.

The PMT then undertakes construction of the building. The building work involves concrete flooring, building of masonry wall, drywall construction, building of roof, building of ceiling, pre-cast building doors and windows installation and waterproofing.

Construction Support and Facilities
To provide support to civil construction activity, the group already has Construction Support Services and Facilities Division that has two major components namely: Heavy Machinery and Equipment Services Unit and Steel Fabrication Factory Unit. The Equipment services unit manages and maintains a fleet of approximately 5,057 units of cranes, earth movers, air compressors forklifts, pumps, trailer tractors, blasting machines and other construction related equipment.

With firm determination and commitment the group is determined to excel in this field as well and leave its imprint in the Civil Construction industry, the way it did in industrial construction. The skylines of the Kingdom and the region will surely have an MMG mark in a very near future.
